Valentines Day

How to write a poem
In honor of Valentine's day, I have decided to write a love poem. But to make it a tad more intersting, I went to wiki how for step by step directions :) Here they are, along with my work based off of following these instructions!

1. Write a page of standard prose, as fast as you can, about how you felt the first time you saw your loved one, how you felt the first time you knew you were in love, and how you feel right now about being together. These three moments in time will create the structure of your poem.
How is it that everything can seem so perfect? The way it feels to be in your arms, your smile and all of your charms. Your loving touch and gentle words we share. The joy inside from the way you care. The butterflies in my tummy and the dizziness in my heart. It's all just beginning but it's a great place to start.

2. Replace any weak verbs with stronger verbs and any pronouns with proper nouns. Words depicting the 5 senses work well for love poems.

Your loving touch and gentle words we share. The joy inside from the way you care. The butterflies in my tummy and the dizziness in my heart. It's all just beginning but it's a great place to start. (Well...I feel like I should do some changing around but I'm having massive writer's block!!)

3.Reread your passage and pick a metaphor to tie the three moments together. Choosing a metaphor is the most fun part so be wild with it. An opening flower is a tried and true metaphor for love, but a cloud that looks like a heart might work even better.

The road has truly wandered far from where I once believed, but now this idea is one my mind can conceive. The thought of me and you, like red and blue, who never thought would be. Together now, at last, and  I believe, for the rest of eternity.

4. Rewrite your passage using the metaphor to describe the three moments.

5. Read your page aloud, change things that sounds "off" to you. Make notes where you feel there's a pause in the flow.

6. Write the poem, putting a line breaks where you made the notes.

7. Whether you type or write the poem consider framing your poem. Your loved one may want to keep the poem as a memento!

8.Read the poem aloud to the person you love, or present it as a gift to them.

9. Let your poem come from your heart, not your mind or soul, but how you feel. As you think about how you're feeling deep down inside your words will come out through your finger tips, slowly your words will unwind and become

So as you can see, I fail at following all directions. Hopefully this was informative and also had an inkling of good poetry thrown in. Happy Valentines Day everyone! May it be a blessed day for you and your loved ones.

Much love and hugs,
Sam

  1. Don't think of it as failing. Oh, and...I think I might know what this poem is specifically about. Of course, I am not the author, so I can only infer!

  2. Hmm well if I am correct with what I believe your inference is, then it is what the poem is about :):3 But...it's only just a little obvious, don't you think?
